I kicked off the 2017 traveling adventures with a road trip through the south island of New Zealand. I’m working on a post filled with recommendations and activity specific videos like bungee jumping and paragliding, but here’s a recap video to get things started.
2016 was a pretty great year for traveling, but I’m looking to beat it in 2017 with a goal of hitting 12 countries. I’ll be bringing all the toys, including drones and 360 cameras so expect to see a lot of footage in the very near future. I’m going to start making recap videos each year so I’m beginning with 2016. Follow me on YouTube and Instagram to keep up to date with all my 2017 travels.
Dierks Bentley released a new music video for his popular song Black. After watching it, I couldn’t help but reminisce. Many of the locations shot in his music video are near Vik, Iceland, including the downed DC-3 plane. If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, I highly recommend stopping by the wreckage site. It was one of my favorite locations and look forward to a return visit. I talk more about this experience on my road trip through Iceland post. Video and pictures of the wreckage site below.
I’m all about experiences so I had to pick up a 360 camera. The technology is improving quickly and you’ll soon start to see many of these videos pop up. I’ll be sharing more videos like this through the ulio&jack brand on Facebook and YouTube. Since this is the first one, feel free to send me any feedback.
Here’s a short video of my quick adventure to Kauai. My best advice for this trip is to rent a 4×4 vehicle and plan on spending the majority of your time exploring the entire island. It’s not very big so you’ll be able to do it in a couple days. We just asked people where to go, but if you’re planning a trip you may want to have a few destinations lined up before you arrive. Pick up The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook for location and activity advice.
I highly recommend the Hanakapiai Trail that leads to a waterfall you can swim under. The water is really cold, but it’s completely worth it after you hike two miles. If you’re certified, you also have to get in a few dives. Other than that, it’s worth mentioning that Kauai pretty much shuts down after 8:00 PM. If you’re looking for a nightlife scene, this isn’t the place for it.
Also, the main image and video clips including the lighthouse are in Honolulu. I spent two days there on the way back from Kauai and discovered Makapuu Point. I happened to get there right at sunset and also watched the Supermoon. It’s definitely an experience I’ll never forget!
Until SpaceX can work out a few small kinks in their ambitious plan to offer space travel, like building non-exploding rockets, walking on a new planet will have to remain with the imagination. However, after visiting Svinafellsjokull glacier in Iceland, it’s a little easier for me to imagine what it would be like to gracefully walk on a foreign planet.
The glacier was one of my favorite locations while traveling through Iceland so make sure to make a stop if you visit the country. Below is a short video during my visit to the glacier followed by a few photos. If you want to watch a big budget film instead, check out Interstellar since the producers used Svinafellsjokull Glacier as one of the film’s locations. You can read about my experience in Iceland if you plan on visiting the country and want a few recommendations.
Experience seeker summarizes my two and a half minute video that took me three months to create (learning to drone, combining some of my favorite quotes into one story, traveling to Iceland for footage and then putting it all together). Three months may seem like a long time, but it’s really a reflection of what I’ve learned over the past ten years. Summarizing those ten years into two words was a little more difficult than I originally thought, but it works and it really defines who I am today and what my brand represents. Here’s why.
The biggest thing I realized was to never stop experiencing the world. There’s never a perfect time to start anything and you can always find an excuse to justify procrastination. That’s going to lead to regret though, which is a much worse feeling than failure. Everyone has dreams, goals, aspirations and all those other feel good words that make people feel full of hope. Those mean nothing without experiences.
If you do nothing then you’re going to be handed experiences. I’m not a fan of handout experiences because they’re typically crap. Instead, I’d rather seek out my own experiences and control my own future. That’s because you cannot become what you want to be by remaining what you are. So, if you want change, start seeking out new experiences, on your own terms. If you’re 100% happy with who you are and where you’re at today then do nothing.
I wanted to create this video for my brand, ulio&jack, because I feel like there aren’t many companies who really focus on who they are. They might tip toe around what they stand for, but I believe in being transparent and standing for something even if that means the message turns people away. That’s because I’d much rather sell my solid cologne and other products to people who believe in what the company stands for than grow a business focused on only revenue.
I hope you enjoy the video and can take something away from it. You can also use #ExperienceSeeker on Instagram for a chance to win free goods. I randomly send products that I don’t even sell online to accounts I feature on the ulio&jack Instagram.
Now, go experience something new today.
Global Entry has always been an essential when traveling internationally. You can read a previous article on the 6 Essentials for an International Trip to learn why. It’s $100, but also comes with TSA Pre and is worth every dollar unless you enjoy waiting in unnecessary lines for up to an hour. I still recommend applying for Global Entry, but you now have a free and instant option to breeze through customs.
The free app is called Mobile Passport Control and is available on iPhone and Android. The service is currently available in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Minneapolis, New York JFK, Newark, Orlando, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Washington Dulles with new locations coming soon.
HOW TO USE
This is really easy and will take less than 5 minutes. For all you selfie lovers out there the longest task will probably be taking your perfect picture.
2. Fill out the information in your profile as it appears on your passport. You can add just your profile or add additional family members.
3. When you’re traveling back home open the app and answer a couple questions about your trip. Once you review your answers submit them and receive your receipt with a barcode.
4. When you land, follow the Mobile Passport Control signs, show the CBP officer your receipt and that’s it. No more waiting in lines that are continuing to grow.
